Tutoring
“Tell me, and I forget, show me, and I remember, involve me, and I understand.”
The mission of the Oxnard College Tutorial Center is to assist students in becoming independent learners through the use of study skills and strategies that will help them succeed in classes across the curriculum. These services are not intended to replace direct instruction given by the instructors, but are designed to enhance studying and learning habits for students.
Who are the Tutors?
Tutors are college students who have outstanding academic records and are selected on the basis of their performance in the subjects they tutor, their communication skills, and their ability to relate to other students in a positive and supportive manner. They are referred by instructors and are hired through an interview process with the Tutorial Services Specialist. Tutors are trained to address difficulties that students may have in learning class material in a way that both their academic self-confidence and ability are impacted. Each semester, the Tutorial Center prepares schedules to tutoring services.
Students can drop by tutoring as much as they like. These services are provided on a first-come, first-served basis.
Tutors work with students to review class material and “teach” students how to study independently. The tutors’ ultimate goal is to “work themselves out of a job”. The Center offers:
- Individual Tutoring
- Drop-in Tutoring
- Group Workshops
- Special Programs

Writing Skills Center
In the Writing Skills Center (WSC) students can work with tutors at any stage of the writing process, from organizing ideas, developing outlines, to focusing on a topic, and helping with grammar usage. Tutors are trained to use tutorial time efficiently working with the student in 20 minutes sessions, to begin, critique, and improve the written work in progress. Proper writing is best done on an ongoing basis; our tutors are not miracle workers whose job is to “save” student writers with last minute assignments, but rather to address writing issues within the framework of a given tutorial session. The WSC tutors will not edit, rewrite or change anything in a paper; in other words, they will not write or rewrite papers for students. They will provide students with strategies for revising and editing their own work.
Math Skills Center
The center offers walk-in assistance to students in math and science courses including physics and chemistry. This is a first-come, first-served service where students meet with a tutor to review class material, clarify difficult concepts and work on homework assignments. Tutors model effective learning and study strategies to help the students become independent learners. At times and depending on the subject, drop-in tutors work with students individually or in small groups.
Individualized tutoring for Special Program Students
Students who participate in special programs such as the Educational Assistance Center (EAC) can meet one-on-one with a tutor for one to two hours per week to review course material, assignments, and build on strategies and methods to help them succeed academically. Please note that individual tutoring is not offered to the general student population. Students should check with the Tutorial Services Specialist to see if they qualify for this type of tutoring
Study Skills Workshops
The Study Skills Workshops offered by the Tutorial Center are designed to help students develop college readiness skills that will assist them in organizing their current and future coursework to achieve their academic and professional goals. These workshops allow students to learn study skills in areas including organization, time management, note taking, and test preparation. Check with the Tutorial Center for schedule information.
Who can become a tutor?
We are always looking for good tutor candidates. A tutor must be academically competent in one or more subject areas and have good interpersonal and communication skills. Tutors are paid hourly employees who gain satisfaction from helping others, and at the same time enrich their educational experience.
Volunteer Tutoring
We hold our volunteer staff to the same requirements as our paid staff. Volunteer tutors are supervised on a regular basis and evaluated at the end of the semester.
